Rosemary wreath {diy}

A week or so ago, I saw this post on the pretty blog on how to make a rosemary wreath.

And then saw this image on tumblr

And thought I needed to try it.

I'm pretty happy with how mine turned out and my dining room is so fragrant now.

White chocolate peppermint pretzels {FAIL}

So while everyone else is posting gorgeous photos of their Christmas decor, beautiful diy gift wrapping and yummy holiday recipes, I thought I'd shared my failed holiday attempt.

Here's my pretty photo of all my ingredients:

I was going to start the post with something about a super easy festive treat that only has three ingredients.

And then I started making it and all the peppermint pieces started falling off and the white chocolate got all drippy and clumped in the peppermint.

I attempted to clean the pan up a bit for this next photo.

I know where I messed up.  I should've crushed up all the candy canes really well before I started.

But while I was crushing them I noticed all this pink dust flying around.  So I put my ziploc bag in another ziploc bag and continued to crush them but more dust came out again.

I decided there was enough fine candy cane crushings in the bottom of the bag for me to roll the chocolate covered pretzels in. So I began.

Turns out I was half right.  The fine candy cane dust stuck to the chocolate but then it rubbed against the big candy cane pieces and fell off.

You know when you picture something in your head and you're like "this is totally going to work!" and then you do it and you're like "that was never going work!"

Here's my one and only good one:

If anyone has any ideas how to crush up candy cane without getting it all over your kitchen, I would love to hear!  It is seriously every. where.

I blame pinterest.

Vanilla - it's the new chocolate {book review}

I had planned on reviewing this book weeks ago, but the day it arrived my mom was at my house and she took it!  I just got it back this past weekend and finally had a chance to flip through it.

I've already flagged about half the book!

Vanilla bean bread pudding?  Making this!

I love the beautifully styled photographs.  Isn't it so much more fun to try a new recipe when you have something beautiful to look at?

Also, none of the recipes look overly complicated and most don't have a long list of ingredients.  I love that!

I had to do a double-take - yes that's a Twinkie Cake.

These soft vanilla sugar cookies look like something my great-grandmother used to make.  Hmm... bake-off?

Vanilla sugar puffs - referred to as chouquettes in France and absolute perfection with a morning café.

Dan's favorite cookie is Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, but I have yet to make a recipe that he's really wow-ed over.  He loved my Salted Toffee Chocolate ones, perhaps Salted Vanilla Chip Oatmeal is the next to try.

There's such a great mix too, of classic recipes and new interesting things to try.

Frosted Vanilla Almonds, Opera Fudge and Vanilla Bean Salted Caramels.  So pretty for the holiday's or a dessert bar.

 Panna Cotta is my absolute favorite.  If it's on the menu served with fresh berries, I will always order it.  I've never tried to make it before but I definitely will now.  Flagged!

 Vanilla Bean Bowls - How amazing are these?!

The recipe looks super easy and wouldn't it be so fun to serve guests?  Filled with fruit and whipped cream, or fresh berries drizzled with chocolate - yum!

I absolutely love the new trend of recipe books including drinks!  Gone are the days of serving wine, soda and iced tea at parties.  It's all about signature cocktails, and wine flights and beer tastings.   Love it!

You know what I really loved about it though?

It's not chocolate.

Grab a copy here. And for under $15!

Pumpkin pull-apart bread

Dan claims that he isn't really into sweets.  But I made this over the Thanksgiving holiday and suggested we bring some over to his parents house. He said he'd have to think about it. :)

Pumpkin Pull-Apart Bread
Ingredients:
Dough
 - 2 Tbsp butter
 - 1/2 cup milk
 - 1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 envelope)
 - 1/4 cup sugar
 - 3/4 cup pumpkin purée
 - 2 1/2 cups flour
 - 1/2 tsp salt

Filling
 - 3 Tbsp butter
 - 1 cup sugar
 - 2 tsp cinnamon
 - 1/2 tsp freshly ground nutmeg
*Note - instead of cinnamon and nutmeg you can use 2 tsp of pumpkin pie spice

Glaze
 - 2 Tbsp butter
 - 1/8 cup brown sugar, heaping
 - 1 1/2 Tbsp milk
 - 1/2 cup powdered sugar
 - 2-3 tsp vanilla bean paste (or 1 Tbsp vanilla extract)

For dough:
Melt butter in a sauce pan over medium-high heat.  When it starts to turn brown, stir it so it doesn't burn and turn black.  This can happen rather quickly.  Once it's all golden brown remove from heat and carefully add milk.  It's best to add room temperature milk or temper the milk by adding a bit of the hot butter to it first.  Return to stove and heat through.  Pour mixture into mixer bowl fitted with a dough hook and allow to cool to approximately 100-110 degrees F.  I don't have a candy thermometer so I just test with my finger.  The mixture should be pretty warm but not too hot to stick your finger in.

Once the mixture has reached the correct temperature, add the yeast and sugar.  Give it one light stir and then let sit for about 8 minutes.  You'll know it's ready because it will be very foamy on top and cloudy.  Add the pumpkin purée, 1 cup of flour and salt and knead on low.  Continue to add the rest of the flour 1/2 cup at a time.  Once all flour is in, knead on low for 6 minutes.  Dough should be smooth and elastic and only slightly sticky.  If the dough is too sticky, add additional flour 1 tablespoon at a time. {When it's cool outside I don't need to add any additional flour, but I've found on hot days I've needed up to 4 Tbsp more. Go figure.}

Place dough in greased bowl.  Make sure to roll dough over in the bowl so all sides get covered. Cover with clean towel and leave in warm place (i.e. on top of dryer, in sunny window, etc. )  Let rise for 90 minutes or until the dough has doubled in size.

{Before rising}

{After rising. And after my mom stuck her fingers in the dough to check it}

For filling:
Brown butter following same process as above.  Combine sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in separate bowl.

On a floured surface, roll out dough into a 12 x 20 inch rectangle.  {This does not have to be perfect - as shown by my "rectangle" below.}

Brush melted butter all over dough and sprinkle sugar-cinnamon mixture on top.  Press sugar firmly into dough so that it sticks.

Cut dough lengthwise into 6 even strips.  Stack strips on top of each other and cut into 6 even portions.

Layer strips vertically into greased loaf pan (as shown below).  {Some sugar probably spilled off the strips.  I scraped this up with my knife and sprinkled it on top.  It made for a delicious crustiness. I highly recommend it.}

Cover loaf pan with clean towel and allow to rise again in a warm place for 30-45 minutes.  Strips should be puffed up and fill pan (as shown below).

Bake dough in preheated oven at 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes or until it's dark golden brown on top.  {Your house will smell amazing!}

For the glaze:
Heat butter, milk and brown sugar in saucepan and bring to a boil.  Lower heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla, until smooth. {Instead of vanilla you can add 1/2 or 1 tsp of rum if you'd rather.}

Pour glaze over warm bread in loaf pan.  I used a knife to separate the strips a bit so that glaze gets in all the little crevices.

Full disclosure - I've had a draft of this post since May.  I never posted it because I needed photos, but whenever I was making this, I just wanted to get it in the oven and never stopped to grab a couple shots.

I know it seems like a lot of steps, but it really is so easy and so delicious.  I hope you enjoy!

I think we're adding this to our Christmas breakfast! :)

Christmas Music

I think it's official, Christmas is coming and one of my favorite things about the holidays is the Christmas music.  I mean, aside from the pine-y Christmas tree smell, warm hot chocolate, baking treats for families and friends, twinkling lights... you get the idea.

When I was little we'd get out all the holiday decorations down from the attic and one of the first things we pulled out was the Christmas music.  This was back when music was on tapes and CD's - The Olden Days.  Actually, I think when I was really little, some of our holiday music was on records!

  We'd spend the day decorating the house with Christmas tunes playing in the background.  Lucky for my family, I knew all the words. :)

I put together a few of my favorites.  My playlist it's pretty pop heavy, but I love it!

1. All I Want for Christmas is You ~ Mariah Carey
2. Where Are You Christmas ~ Faith Hill  -  Love this song!  It's from the Grinch that Stole Christmas. And it just melts my heart every time it comes on.
3. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas ~ Martina McBride
4. My Only Wish (This Year) ~ Britney Spears
5. Shake Up Christmas ~ Train
6. Last Christmas ~ Ashley Tisdale
7. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) ~ U2
8. Santa Baby ~ Eartha Kitt  - My favorite version!
9. Santa Claus is Comin' to Town ~ Frank Sinatra
10. This Christmas ~ Christina Aguilera
11. Carol of the Bells ~ John Williams
12. I'll be Home for Christmas ~ Katherine McPhee
13. On My Knees ~ Jaci Velasquez
14. Love Song for a Savior ~ Jars of Clay - Absolutely one of my favorite worship songs.
15. I Don't Want to Spend One More Christmas Without You ~ InSync
16. All Alone on Christmas ~ Darlene Love - From Love Actually - best holiday movie!

I'm not going to lie, even during the year when these songs come on my iPod, I don't change 'em.

What are some of your favorite Christmas songs or albums?

I'm always looking to add to my list!

Wine Tasting Weekend - Thanksgiving

I feel kinda funny about all the gushing I did about New York in autumn.  I guess I forgot how beautiful it is in wine country - right in my own backyard!

Last weekend, because Dan's sister and brother-in-law were up from Hermosa, we decided to spend the day in Napa picnicking and wine-tasting.

We headed to Hall winery first, which none of us had been to before, but was the perfect stop.

They were already all decked out for Christmas.
{Dan's sister, Lisa, brother-in-law, Sean and Caper}

We were at the St. Helena location but we're definitely planning on checking out their place in Rutherford.  Mainly just so I can see this chandelier in person.

As always, we headed to Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Company for our picnicking accoutrements.  I debated about posting about this place, simply because it's so so tiny but it's too good not to tell you about.

It's a small white barn at the end of one of St. Helena's small streets.  An Italian family runs it and it's old style - as in cash or check only.  As in ask the Italian mother how to make something and she'll stand right there and explain in detail even when there's a line of people behind you.  Love it!

  They make the most wonderful olive oils and balsamic vinegars.  I picked up a pomegranate balsamic that I can't wait to try on roasted veggies or salads.

We filled our basket with salumi, cheeses, pepperoni, bread and mustards and then headed to Beringer to grab some wine and a picnic table.

Family photo!
My favorite of the day.

Dan's mon packed a tablecloth which seems like such a small thing but made our lunch feel so much more homey. :)

Last stop: Rubicon

I love it here.

It's always prettier than I remembered.

Sadly, Pacino was coned for the weekend.
 He got in an argument with his cousin, Caper, and she won.  Luckily he came out of it with only a minor scratch on his eye.  Should teach him not to fight with family!

Hope your thanksgiving weekend was gorgeous and beautiful and hopefully a bit better than Pacino's!
